No Blade of Grass feels just as disturbing now as it must have in , Maybe the most influential was the BBC produced miniseries The Day of the Triffids (based on a book by John Wyndham which also was the basis for an excellent flick of the same name). No Blade of Grass is a post apocalyptic movie based on the book The Death of Grass by Samual Youd. I had never heard of the book before, but the premise is quite simple: A virus strain that kills rice crops, spreads across the world and starts affecting other crops and grasses.

Archive Collection. Veteran Hollywood actor and director Cornel Wilde (THE NAKED PREY) took a great interest in Samuel Youd’s (under the nom de plume “John Christopher”) novel No Blade of Grass, envisioning it as making for an interesting and thought-provoking motion picture.

No Blade of Grass first hit America as a seven-part serial in The Saturday Evening Post and was widely popular; its publication later that year by Simon and Schuster made it a bestseller and one of the most popular SF books of the year. John Christopher’s No Blade of Grass (also known as The Death of Grass) is one of those books which has haunted me, and I’m going to have to find another copy just so I can finally read it again.

I read and adored Christopher’s Tripods books as a boy, and was eager to finally read one of his well-loved books for opher (pen name of author Samuel Youd) wrote many books for.

Cornel Wilde’s grim No Blade of Grass () is a forgotten dystopian classic due for rediscovery. Gritty and brutal, built on fears of ecological devastation through pollution and overcrowding (with hints of genetic manipulation gone bad), this end-of-the-world thriller seems to have gotten lost in the overcrowded apocalypse now science fiction cinema of the seventies.
